Maths Counts 2015 Conference

Maths Counts 2015 will be on 17th & 18th April – registration still open.

Minister for Skills, Research and Innovation, Damien English, will officially open the conference on Friday evening. The keynote speaker is Geoffrey Wake from the University of Nottingham.  Geoffrey is an Associate Professor in Mathematics Education and his address will be ‘Solving a Problem: Lessons for Problem Solving’.  A wine and canapé reception will follow the keynote address.

There are 20 parallel sessions taking place on the Saturday covering a wide range of practical topics from ‘Introducing quadratic functions through problem – solving’ or ‘Valuing the variable – The hidden code’ to ‘Household Bills: Introducing simultaneous equations in a problem solving context’ and ‘Using arrays to factorise polynomials’.

There will also be speakers from the State Examinations Commission, National Council for Curriculum and Assessment and the Department of Education and Skills.

It all promises to be a wonderful event and provides an excellent opportunity to meet other maths teachers from around the country and exchange ideas.

The Minister for Research and Innovation, Seán Sherlock, TD, announced the launch of a STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) Education Review Group, which is expected to prepare a report on STEM education in Ireland over the next six months.
