“Why geography and location are so important in today’s digital world – linking Geography, Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence”

Thursday, March 24, 2022 – 10:00 to 10:45 | Zoom

Dr Peter Mooney, Computer Science Department, Maynooth University

  • In this talk we will show how geography, computer science and artificial intelligence combine by:
  • the importance of geolocation (your current location) and how this is one of the most sensitive and powerful pieces of personal information you have
  • how maps or more precisely digital maps work
  • what interesting parts of computer science are needed to essentially make computers and digital technologies understand geography.
  • how can Artificial Intelligence be used to give us ‘superpowers’ from geography and data, images and video of the world around us? For example, how can drones tell us if fruit is ready to pick, how does your smartphone camera know there is a building or a tree in the photograph, how do driverless cars know how to stay in the correct lane and get to their destination and how can AI predict and know where you are going to go before you do!

Audience:  The talk is suitable for TY, 5th and 6th years – it will be of particular interest to students who are interested in Geography, Computing, Programming, Online Maps and of course the world of Artificial Intelligence.
